For players who bring their own string and pay labour only. Companion to the strings guide and restring checklist. No live pack prices here — compare dated retailer pages yourself.
Before you click buy
Confirm the product, not the colourway.
Exact name + gauge — e.g. model and 1.25 mm vs 1.30 mm. A different gauge is a different bed.
Set vs reel — a set is usually one racket (sometimes labelled 12 m); a reel is many jobs. Do not buy a reel unless you string often or share with a club.
Hybrid packs — some “hybrid” listings are two half-sets. Check whether mains and crosses are both included and which string is which.
Poly / multi / syn gut — match the type you already agreed with your stringer (see type notes on the strings guide).
UK seller / VAT / delivery — note delivery time so the pack arrives before your booking; keep the invoice if you need a returns trail.
What to ask on the product page
Is length enough for your pattern (open patterns can use more string)?
Is it a current formulation or an old colour-only listing with the same name?
Any “tennis” vs “badminton” mis-tag in the title? Read the spec block.
Return window if the packet arrives damaged or wrong gauge.
Whether the listing shows a manufacturing or best-before style date (rare, but useful on old warehouse stock).
What to tell your stringer
Bring the sealed set (or clearly labelled half-sets for a hybrid).
Say mains vs crosses if you are supplying a hybrid.
Confirm tension and labour-only price before they cut the packet.
Ask them to return offcuts if you want them — not all shops do.
Pack maths
Ready-to-play is labour + the set.
Illustration only (not a quote): if labour is the dated bring-your-own figure on the strings guide and your pack cost is whatever you paid today, add them for the true restring total. Do not invent a “usual” pack price here — screenshot or note the retailer price and date when you compare.
If you break strings rarely, one set at a time beats a reel that sits for years. If you break often, ask your stringer whether a reel or a club bulk buy is worth it before you stock a drawer.
Skip the pack when…
You do not know type or gauge yet — book a stringer recommendation first.
The only listings are unlabelled “poly 1.25” with no brand or model.
You need the racket back faster than delivery allows — use string-included service instead.
